Mercedes Fire Department

Established in May of 1909, the fire department is lead by Chief Jaime Garcia.  Chief Garcia has been a member of the Mercedes Fire Department since April of 1986.

The department is a combination department.  This means that it is staffed with paid and volunteer firefighters.  We currently have seven (7) paid firefighters and twenty-five (25) volunteers.  The paid firefighters are divided into two shifts of three.  Both shifts work Monday-Friday.  

The first shift begins work at 7:00 am and ends at 3:00 pm.  The second shift begins at 3:00 pm and ends at 11:00 pm.  The hours between 11:00 pm and 7:00 am and weekends are staffed by volunteer firefighters.

The fire department responds to about 950 calls annually and has a coverage area of about 85 square miles.  The fire department currently has four (4) engine companies, two (2) brush trucks, two (2) tankers and a mini-pumper.
